SPEARWOOD WOOL is a 100% Western Australian owned business established in 2000 by principals Andrew Basire and Rob Thorn.

Both Andrew and Rob have over 40 years experience in the industry since starting together in 1980, as Technical Officers with Wesfarmers. After 5 years Andrew moved on to take up a Buyer/Exporter position with Modiano Australia, a leading international buyer and exporter of Australian wool. Towards the end of 1990 Andrew moved back to Wool Broking with Rural Traders, a position held until 1992, when he started his own business country buying and selling.

Rob moved from Wesfarmers in 1989 to take up a senior position with Rural Traders, as Head Auctioneer and Senior Valuer, before taking over as manager in 1993, a position held until he left to start his own country buying business in 1998.

Rob and Andrew joined forces in 2000 and started Spearwood Wool. Noel Bolitho and Peter Page were initial members and contributed over 100 years of combined wool industry experience.

Andrew’s son, Liam joined the business on a full time basis in 2018 and now manages the Forrestdale office and store as well as being the Wool Buyer for the Great Southern Region. Nico Brits joined the business after working with AWN in Goulburn NSW, Nico is now servicing Rob Thorn’s existing clients across the Wheatbelt, through to the lower South West of WA. Brent Morey and Colin Gunning are two self employed self motivated agents for the business with many years of experience who continue to work tirelessly with Spearwood Wool clients.

The company has enjoyed exceptional growth since its inception and with an ever diminishing world supply of wool still handles in excess of  15,000 bales annually with an extensive grower contact list of over 400. Exporter support is strong and ever increasing with over 30 different companies buying wool from us to deliver to all parts of the world. We offer a wide range of wool selling options including flexi-sell, forward pricing and auction when required. Spearwood Wool has direct links to overseas exporters and mills in several countries to facilitate farm gate to mill contracts, as well as mill direct blending when required. Blending and machining is controlled in store at Forrestdale to clients’ requirements, then full AWTA testing is carried out prior to shipping.

Spearwood Wool is a member of the Wool Industries Australia, Private Treaty Wool Merchants Association of Australia and the Australian Wool Exchange, providing wool growers the confidence and peace of mind, dealing with a business with strong industry ties.
